This is the second in my series of videos in which we re-examine the much-hyped about Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Probably with all the hype about photographs, propagandists seem to overlook something else installed on NASA's new moon probe. In addition to the high resolution cameras, the LRO also carries an instrument known as Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter. Or LOLA for short. To help extract the topographic details of the moon's surface, LOLA fires a series of laser pulses at the moon and back at LRO. This allows the probe to measure the time it takes for each laser to return and thus create a digital elevation model of the terrain. It is important to note that this craft bounces lasers off the moon - without the aid of retroreflectors.
